According to 107.5 The Game and the Hattiesburg American newspaper, South Carolina Assistant Head Coach and Defensive Coordinator, Ellis Johnson, is a viable candidate to replace Larry Fedora, who accepted the University of North Carolina Head Football Coach position late last night. Why would Southern Mississippi be interested in the Winnsboro, SC native? Well, Johnson was the Defensive Coordinator for the Golden Eagles from 1988-89 and associates of Southern Mississippi were fond of Ellis Johnson during his brief stay in Hattiesburg, MS.
Per Patrick Magee of the Hattiesburg American newspaper, Johnson would be one of eight possible candidates to replace Larry Fedora. Johnson is one of the most respected defensive coordinators in college football and has deep ties to the Southeast, having served as a defensive coordinator on staffs at Alabama, Southern Miss, Mississippi State, USC, Clemson, Appalachian State and Head Coach of The Citadel (2001-2003).
This is pure speculation until names start bubbling to the surface in the coaching rumor mill. But once Southern Miss begins its coaching search then USC fans might have cause for concern with our current Defensive Coordinator. Johnson does have aspirations of being a head coach for the second time in his career and a Conference USA Head Football Coaching position would be a respectable and “good fit” for Johnson. Southern Miss has tradition and is capable of beating bigger BCS level schools for high school talent in Mississippi and surrounding Border States.
Stay tuned Gamecock fans!
